No one has yet defeated The Invisible Enemy. If we want to win and then control the pain, we need to know what we are up against.

Pain is only felt when your brain concludes that you are under threat.
Feeling pain depends on factors other than damage to your body.
For example, you can be physically damaged and feel no pain OR you can have recovered from the damage but still feel pain because your brain still believes you are in danger.

How do we perceive pain?

Muscle tissues themselves don’t recognize pain
Nerves themselves do not transmit pain messages
Pain is a warning system
The pain you feel is dependent on how your brain determines the threat
